Bees may be small, but they are among the most important creatures in the natural world. These remarkable insects play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting global food production. As bees move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they transfer pollen between plants. This process, known as pollination, allows many plants to reproduce and produce fruits and seeds. Without pollinators such as bees, many crops and wild plants would struggle to survive. In fact, pollinators help produce a large portion of the food humans eat. Scientists estimate that roughly one-third of the food we consume depends on pollination, and bees are among the most effective pollinators in nature. Bees also support biodiversity by helping flowering plants reproduce, which in turn provides food and shelter for countless other animals and insects. Without bees, many ecosystems would be dramatically different. Australia alone is home to more than 1,700 native bee species, many of which look very different from the familiar honey bee and play an important role in pollinating native plants. The Bee Challenge badge celebrates these fascinating insects and encourages participants to learn about their importance, observe the natural world, and discover how people can help protect pollinators.
