Book Day INTB

This week, several countries are celebrating World Book Day, including the United Kingdom and Ireland. Other countries mark the occasion on different dates throughout the year. While the exact date varies internationally, the purpose remains the same: to promote reading for pleasure and to ensure that every child has access to books.

World Book Day is a celebration of reading and storytelling, and the day encourages children and adults alike to discover new stories, revisit old favourites, and recognise the importance of literacy.

Why World Book Day Matters

Books are a wonderful form of entertainment, but they also:

  • Build vocabulary and language skills
  • Develop empathy and understanding
  • Strengthen imagination and creativity
  • Improve concentration and focus
  • Support academic success

Reading creates shared experiences. A story read aloud becomes a memory. A favourite character becomes part of childhood. For many children, a book can open doors to places they have never been and ideas they have never considered.

The Origins of World Book Day

World Book Day has its roots in UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day, first celebrated in 1995 on 23 April — a date chosen to honour the deaths of famous authors such as William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. In some countries, the celebration takes place in March to better align with the school calendar.

Over time, the event has grown into a major annual celebration of reading in schools and communities. World Book Day is often marked by:

  • Dress-up days where children come as favourite characters
  • Author visits and storytelling sessions
  • Book swaps or book fairs
  • Reading challenges
  • Creative writing activities

The Power of a Simple Book

In a world filled with screens and constant digital distraction, books offer something uniquely powerful: quiet immersion.

Reading encourages children to slow down, imagine deeply, and think critically. Unlike passive entertainment, books ask the reader to participate — to picture the setting, interpret the characters, and engage with ideas.

A book does not need batteries, Wi-Fi, or updates. It only needs curiosity.

Encouraging Reading at Home

World Book Day is a convenient reminder that reading does not need to be formal or complicated. Simple ways to support reading include:

  • Reading aloud together
  • Visiting your local library
  • Creating a cosy reading corner at home
  • Allowing children to choose their own books
  • Talking about stories and favourite characters

A Day to Celebrate Stories

Stories connect generations, preserve culture, share knowledge, and inspire exploration. Whether it’s a picture book, a novel, a biography, or a collection of poems, every book has the potential to leave a lasting mark.
