Our Chicken-pox Party
Yes, you read that correctly.
What do you do when you’ve carefully planned a social catch-up with friends, only to discover that the host needs to quarantine after being exposed to chicken-pox?
Naturally, you relocate the gathering and transform it into a Chicken-Pox Party. The primary goal, of course, was to avoid anyone actually catching chicken-pox — and that is exactly how our chicken-themed afternoon came about. The original host joined us via Zoom and was able to participate fully thanks to a safely delivered Chicken-Pox Party Pack.
Guests each contributed a chicken-themed snack to share, resulting in a very on-brand spread that included Chicken Shapes, chicken sandwiches, and creatively labelled offerings such as “kitchen scraps” and “chicken-poo biscuits”.
We kicked things off by discovering our “chicken names”, setting the tone for a fun and light-hearted afternoon. With names based on a combination of first names and birth months, our flock included Clucky Yolk, Moulting Hen and Moulting Nest at the Hen House — with Jolly Cluck joining us from the Quarantine Coop.
From there, we worked our way through the planned activities:
- finding chicken-related words in a large-print word search
- testing our knowledge of chooks and famous chicken characters with a trivia game, which saw Jolly Cluck awarded Best in Show
- creating felt chickens through a hands-on craft activity
- collaborating to solve logic puzzles — including identifying which police officers arrested the chook thieves, which town mayor presented prizes to the Champion Chook semi-final winners, which child collected the most eggs from the yard, and which escaped chook was enjoying the corn kernels
- decorating pots and planting sunflower seeds to grow a future snack suitable for chooks
It was a relaxed and creative afternoon full of unexpected chook-related anecdotes. A thoroughly entertaining way to stay connected — proof that even an unexpected quarantine can hatch something memorable.
