I’m a Leader’s Kid. Just 5 More Minutes. Yeah Right!

If you have ever been the child of a Leader, or the Leader with children as youth members, you’ll understand the total accuracy of the statement on this badge.

These badges were created by Tracey Walsh of 1st Port Macquarie Sea Scouts, based on her own experience as a Scout Leader with children as youth members. When your parent is a volunteer Leader, meetings don’t start at the scheduled time. And they don’t finish when everyone else goes home either. Leader’s kids are usually the first to arrive and the very last to leave.

And when they ask the classic question, “Can we go now?”

The answer is almost always the same.

“Yeah… just give me five more minutes.”

Of course, everyone knows that “five minutes” rarely means five minutes.

Being a Leader’s child comes with its own unique challenges. Leader’s kids often work even harder to earn their badges so there is no suggestion of favouritism. They share their parents with a whole group of other young people, and sometimes miss out on family time while their parents volunteer.

They deserve a badge. Just to say thank you for going the extra mile with parents as Leaders. This badge is a small but meaningful way to recognise those amazing kids who quietly support their Leader parents every week.

It’s a fun badge with a very real story behind it — and a great way to say thank you to the kids who go the extra mile.

Funds raised from the sale of these badges support the 1st Port Macquarie Sea Scouts Group in the North Coast Region of Scouting, NSW to purchase new activity equipment and replace ageing camping gear.
