I’ve been patiently holding on to a packet of sunflower seeds for six months, waiting to complete a challenge for the Scarecrows and Garden Gnomes badge. The instructions on the packet said the soil needed to be warm, so I had to wait for Ballarat’s weather to deliver a run of consistently hot days before planting. Summer has finally delivered, and I’ve had the opportunity to plant the seeds at last.
With no real gardening skills — and generally not much success — I decided to plant them in a variety of locations to see where they perform best. Some are in pots in the vegetable garden (which doesn’t actually have vegetables yet), some are planted in the backyard garden, and others are spread across a couple of sunny garden beds in the front yard.
Fingers crossed they grow.
January 7
I’m a little excited because this might be a baby sunflower sprouting in one of the pots in the vegetable garden (which does now have a vegetable — but more about that later).
Of course, it could also just be a weed.
Nothing has appeared yet in any of the other spots where I planted the seeds. That said, lack of sun definitely isn’t the issue — most of the special plant labels I made from PLA plastic have warped in the heat.
Update:
I've just checked the front garden and can see new growth in two more of the locations containing seeds. That gives me a bit more confidence that they are indeed sunflowers, and not weeds.
