I think the We Do Not Care Club deserves it’s own special badge. Maybe even a whole badge syllabus.
The informal club (often abbreviated to WDNC for short), is led by the wonderfully hilarious Melanie Sanders who is ‘putting the world on notice that we simply just do not care much anymore’. If you’ve seen her Facebook posts, you’ll know exactly what I’m referring to. She reads from her ever-growing list of things she no longer cares about, marking each one off with a satisfying swipe of a yellow highlighter.
Each segment begins with her welcome to the virtual members of her club – especially women experiencing midlife transitions. She ends by inviting the audience to contribute their own “I no longer care” items, which makes the whole thing feel like a global conversation of solidarity and humour.
The WDNC movement is expanding across several countries. It’s all about embracing authenticity, letting go of perfection, and shaking off the pressure of society’s endless rules around how we look, behave, and spend our time.
The reason I was thinking of this today is that I was making a batch of cookies. I really can’t cook and I was cheating by using “Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie and Biscuits Dough – Raspberry and White Chocolate”, instead of baking biscuits from scratch.
And I realised that I didn’t care.
I did take into account that the purchase of the cookie dough supported a fundraising activity for a kids’ sporting organisation, and benefitted an Australian business.
And I had already spent enough of the day adulting by:
- uploading 2 digital resources to the website for the Bee Challenge (covering the bee life cycle and honey-making process)
- visiting the post office 15 minutes before closing time to post some Doughnut Challenge badges
- mowing the lawns and cutting up a limb that had broken off the wattle tree
- washing 3 loads of laundry, including doonas and sheets belonging to an adult child with no space to hang them out to dry
- vacuuming the floors
- cleaning the shower
- preparing for some upcoming volunteer tasks
I’m pretty sure this can all contribute to the ‘Adulting is a Challenge that Deserves a Badge‘ challenge.
Now we need to convince Melanie to create an official “We Do Not Care” badge.
